Racial Profiling
On February 26th 2012 in Sanford Florida, a boy by the name of Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. In response to the ruling of the Trayvon Martin case in 2013, former President Barack Obama stated that, “Trayvon Martin could have been me, 35 years ago.” This is a scary thought to think about. Someone who turned out to be the 44th president of the United States of America could have been killed 35 years ago just because of the color of his skin. Racism has been occurring in the United States since the founding of the country, however ever since the late 1900’s, it has not been as prevalent as it used to be or so it was thought. In recent years it seems that cases of police racially profiling minorities specifically young black males have been occurring a lot more frequently. There are those who believe that racial profiling is helpful and should be allowed and there are also those who believe that it is causing a lot of problems and should be eliminated.
Trayvon Martin is not the only case. Some other examples of this racial profiling occurred to people like Michael Brown, Alton Sterling and Eric Garner. Racial Profiling has become a relevant topic in recent times due to many people being physically and mentally harmed due to the police racially profiling them or people they know. All of these acts have been carried out by police which leads people to put the blame on all police officers for the wrongdoing of those racist police that actually harm these minorities. Although not all police harm the minorities, many people believe that getting rid of police brutality will solve all the problems while others believe that it will just create new problems in crime rates. Police officers should not be allowed to racially profile because the costs that it brings, such as death, psychological effects and distrust between the police and the community, greatly outweigh the benefits.
